As a leading national nonprofit, Keep America Beautiful (KAB) inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. They envision a country in which every community is a clean, green, and beautiful place to live. Established in 1953, KAB provides the expertise, programs and resources to help people End Littering, Improve Recycling, and Beautify America’s Communities.
The organization is driven by the work and passion of more than 600 community-based Keep America Beautiful affiliates, millions of volunteers, and the support of corporate partners, municipalities, elected officials, and individuals. Their collective action champions environmentally healthy, socially-connected, and economically-sound communities. Keep America Beautiful continues to bring people together to transform public spaces into beautiful places.
Carmel Cares has formed Keep Carmel Beautiful as a program that will allow us to become a certified KAB affiliate so we can leverage their expertise and programs and network with other communities across the country to help us achieve our mission. Keep Carmel Beautiful (KCB)Â is a Community Engagement program that was created as Carmel Cares’ affiliation with KAB. It will encompass all of our efforts to make Carmel litter-free and improve the efficiency of Carmel’s recycling efforts. We will be working towards becoming a certified KAB affiliate by following their process, getting educated, completing yearly litter surveys, and following their guidelines for corporate governance.
A KCB Advisory Board has been established. This includes residents, business representatives from all business types, and eventually Chamber of Commerce, waste management partners, and City government. Together, they will make decisions on how to best apply KAB processes in Carmel-by-the-Sea, conduct surveys, and communicate with constituents regarding how they can assist in those efforts.Â
We think you’ll see that it is really quite easy to make a big difference in the Village.
Each year we will be conducting a Litter Survey that will involve inspecting all areas of the City, taking notes of the condition of those areas, and comparing the findings with the Survey Committee members, and writing up a report. That report will be made public and will be the guiding force for a plan to improve our ability to become a litter-free community.
