Yes, at Carmel Cares we do get a little carried away on some things. And, we have fun doing things along with some other Carmelites like looking after one of the median islands in town or growing baby trees in our back yard. Well, along the way we found out that when you are working with City property, like easements or median islands, you are supposed to get an encroachment permit which is a somewhat complicated thing. So, we worked with Public Works to design a program that can empower anyone to “adopt” a median island and grow a seedling that can be planted in the forest. This section will tell you have you can take part in these programs as well as helping to keep our town litter free.
Carmel is famous for its quaint median islands, easements and “bulb-outs” all over town. In fact, there are over 100 of them. Now you or your neighborhood can adopt one and keep it beautiful. It’s easy and fun to do and we will provide you with tools, assistance, plants and mulch.
If you want to help replenish Carmel’s urban forest, sign up to be a Tree Tender. You’ll receive an oak or pine seedling that you will raise until it is ready to be planted in the forest. Over the next 10 years we will need hundreds of new trees so help us out with this easy and rewarding activity.
It isn’t uncommon to find trash here and there on sidewalks, paths or on the beach around Carmel. If you already pick up trash or would like to play an active role, sign up to join the Carmel Cares Pick-Up Posse. We’ll provide you with a T-shirt, a pick-up device and track your hours to help us apply for grants.
