As our Pick Up Posse and Median Minders work around dowtown Carmel to do their part of helping to take Carmel from special to spectacular, they sometime run into situations that need some special attention.So, we formed a group of volunteers that prioritize those areas and take care of them. They do whatever it takes, either by themselves, with professional gardeners, or with the assistance of Carmel Public Works and Carmel’s waste hauler, Greenwaste.
The Detail even has their own Carmel Cares van, complete with a broad selection of landscaping tools. Using donated funds, they buy plants, pots, mulch and whatever it takes to keep Carmel looking good. Every Thursday and Saturday, a group of 4-10 Detailers meet up at a pre-selected spot that needs some attention and they sweep, trim, plant, water, or do whatever it takes. When they are done, that street, corner, or storefront area is detailed and beautiful, ready for the locals and visitors to appreciate.
They have even forged a Carmel Cares Business Partner Program to give accolades with a window stick to those businesses who assist them with donations, ideas, and permission to work on their storefronts. It’s a real win/win situation.

One of the places that all Carmelites must go to often is the Post Office. Since there aren’t regular street addresses all mail is delivered to the Post Office and residents have to go there to pick it up. Our Downtown Detailers love to keep the parking lot and tree wells cleaned up. They have also replanted all the raised beds, planting mostly native plants and keeping them watered and trimmed. Give them some love if you see them working.
On the right you’ll see a picture of Roger and Terry Dahl, the originators of this program. Roger has passed on but will always be remembered as one of the most ambitious and passionate of all Carmel Cares volunteers and an incredible person throughout his life.
All the cute bump outs and tree wells around downtown take quite a beating from passersby and the many dogs that Carmel is famous for. Our Downtown Detail team loves to clean them up and introduce plantings, pots, or just remove the weeds.
One of the biggest things about the Downtown Detail is the fun they have while working, the friends they make, and the joy they bring to the community.
